[1] For an introduction to this set of inscribed records see Meyer, Metics, no. 1 with notes. As Lewis (Attic Manumissions, pp. 235-37) points out, the present stele appears to be among those that lack any reference to phialai in each entry. Thus, we have tentatively allocated this fragment to the same date as other fragments which do not mention phialai (cf. Meyer, Metics, no. 26 with notes). [2] These lines are at the center of the interpretive debate surrounding the phialai inscriptions, because of the apparent reference to either dikē apostasiou (the traditional restoration) or graphē aprostasiou (Meyer’s restoration) in line 2. Erring on the side of caution, I have left all restorations in the heading untranslated, but the alleged reference to dikē apostasiou agrees quite well with a wide range of other pieces of evidence suggesting a link between the phialai inscriptions and slave manumission (see Meyer, Metics, no. 1 with notes). In l. 1, IG II² and Meyer restore the position occupied by Demoteles as the office of polemarch. [3] IG II² tentatively takes the deme to be Piraeus, but Meyer’s autopsy shows it instead to be Paionidai (abbreviated Παι). [4] Although IG II² restores phialai in the entries in Col. 2, Lewis (Attic Manumissions, p. 237) points out that “there is no reason to suppose their presence.” I have thus omitted them from my translation of this column. Note that a format change has occurred in the lacuna of Col. 1; at the top of Col. 2, the stele has already switched to the “reversed format” (i.e., Arkas is the slave set free by a manumitter who originally appeared at the bottom of Col. 1).
