[1] This honorific decree was identified by Petrakos as passed by the deme Rhamnous and honouring a general of the coast ca. 250-200 BC. Knoepfler, however, notes that the form καλῖν for καλεῖν (4) pulls towards a later date (cf. Threatte I 195-9) as do verbal parallels with I Rhamnous 420 (esp. ll. 35-38), a decree of Athenian soldiers relating to 184/3 BC. In both cases, however, the references to hieropoioi in office at any time and to sacrifice to Nemesis raise the possibility that, despite the proposer of I Rhamnous 420 not being a demesman of Rhamnous, the deme was associated with the soldiers in passing the decree; or, perhaps more likely, the functions of the deme in relation to the cult of Nemesis, including the supply of hieropoioi, were effectively exercised at this period by the broader collective of Athenian citizens at Rhamnous. It is perhaps suggestive in this regard that at Eleusis, the other deme which passed hybrid decrees involving the deme and Athenian residents/soldiers, there is a complete absence of decrees to which the deme was a party between 229 and 166 BC, and only decrees passed by Athenian residents and/or soldiers are extant from this period.
