[1] Textual Note. The restorations of this decree by Petrakos were intended to yield the general sense of the text and we retain them, pending further work on the stone, though it should be noted that the clause expressing what service had been performed by the honorand is almost wholly restored (8) and the difficulties in restoring what remains of ll. 6 and 9 perhaps also raise uncertainties about l. 8.

This is ostensibly a decree of the deme Rhamnous alone, though the fact that one of the commissioners for its inscription was from the closely neighbouring deme Eitea (12) raises the possibility the decree was passed jointly by the deme and the Athenian soldiers resident in the deme, as commonly at this period. On this fluidity in the definition of bodies passing decrees at Rhamnous, see I Rhamnous 17 (also introduced as a decree of Rhamnous, but according the resolution clause passed jointly by other Athenian residents) and I Rhamnous 31, with notes. None of the persons mentioned is otherwise known. The decree was plausibly dated to the first half of the 3rd century BC by Petrakos (Knoepfler tentatively suggests the 260s, pointing out that the inclusion of the invocation, "Gods", at the head of the text, and the style of the lettering tend to suggest a relatively early date).

The agora at Rhamnous, which was within the area of the fortress, was also the location for the decrees of the paroikoi stationed at Rhamnous, I Rhamnous 23 (l. 18) and 43 (l. 28), which might support the view that the Athenian soldiers stationed at Rhamnous were joint parties to this decree, though a wide variety of locations is attested for decrees passed by the deme and other bodies at Rhamnous and there are no general rules.
