[1] Anagyrous was a medium-sized deme of the tribe Erechtheis (bouleutic quota 6 in the late-5th - 4th century BC, e.g. IG I³ 515, 17-23; IG II³ 4, 51, 3-9) on the west coast of Attica south of Aixone and Halai Aixonides, in the area of modern Vari, where this inscription was found in the 19th century. It has accordingly been tentatively identified as an honorific decree of Anagyrous, and if so, it is the only extant decree of that deme. The attractive (but uncertain) restored reference in ll. 4-6 to an award of proedria at the local Dionysia gains some support from other evidence for the Anagyrasian Rural Dionysia, in particular two choregic dedications attributable to that festival, IG I³ 969 (tragedy), and IG II³ 4, 507 (comedy), and a marble throne from near Vari inscribed with the name of a deme member, which is plausibly identifiable as deriving from proedria in the local theatre, IG II³ 4, 1714 (the theatre itself has not been identified. Less easy to reconcile with an Anagyrasian attribution are the role of the honorand in local defence (phylake), normally associated with border forts (cf. Whitehead, Demes, 401), and the restoration of l. 4 to refer to proedria specifically at the tragic competition (Csapo and Wilson note that a comic, κωμωιδῶν, rather than a tragic, τραγωιδῶν, context, might alternatively be restored). A grant of proedria specifically for tragedy or comedy is not very plausible in a deme where both tragedy and comedy are attested. It cannot, therefore, be ruled out that this is a pierre errante from one of the demes where defences were located (e.g. the border demes, Rhamnous or Eleusis; Hellenistic fortifications are also attested in neighbouring Halai Aixonides, see RO 46, with notes; there is no Rural Dionysia attested at Sounion).
