[1] This fragmentary marble base is a fifth-century dedication commemorating a victory in dithyrambic competitions at the City Dionysia (cf. IG II³ 4, 460 with notes).

A. E. Raubitschek suggested on tenuous grounds that this inscription may be identical with IG II² 3027, a much more complete inscription recorded by Cyriacus of Ancona in 1436 (pers. comm. in B. D. Meritt Hesperia 23, 1954, 249-50). Given that Cyriacus did not pay much attention to the division of lines (his copy was written in scriptio continua, cf. Bodnar 1960, 139-42), Raubitschek suggests the following reconstruction: Ἀντιοχὶς ἐνίκα ǁ Ἀριστείδης ἐχορήγει ǁ Ἀρχέστρατος ἐδίδασκε ǁ [...]-στρατος Ἀργ[εῖος ηὔλε] ("Antiochis was victorious, Aristeides was sponsor, Archestratos was director, -stratos of Argos [was pipe-player]", see SEG 14.26). According to this theory the inscription had three columns of two lines each and a third line running across the bottom with the name of the lost pipe-player. It is based crucially on the observation that the first letters of col. 2 begin with A- (Ἀ[ριστείδης] Raub.) and E- (ἐ[χορήγει] Raub.). The extent of the connection between the two texts is too slight to render Raubitschek’s reconstruction more than speculative. For criticism see Oikonomides in AncW 3, 1980, 17-9 = SEG 30.124-5, who believes Cyriacus' text was part of the monument commemorating the victory of Kallias son of Telokles as gymnasiarch for Pandionis (IG I³ 969bis[b], cf. Davies, APF 7840).
