[1] This is the base for a statue of an archon of the Panhellenion, who served concurrently as priest of Hadrian Panhellenios and competition-director of the Panhellenia games (as was usual). On the Panhellenion, see IG II³ 4, 215 with notes. Aurelius Rufus may be the sophist Rufus of Perinthos, whose service as an archon of the Panhellenion is mentioned at Philostratos Vit. Soph. 2.17 (S. Follet, Athènes, 1976, p. 130). On education (paideia) as a key virtue for Panhellenes, cf. IG IV 858, OGIS 504-507 and I Sardis 319-320 with notes.
