Honours for the grain protectors (sitophylakes)

Decree 1 (Council) Gods. In the archonship of Athenodoros (239/8), in the twelfth prytany, [[of Antigonis]]I,[1] for which Arketos son of Archias of HamaxanteiaX was secretary. On the twenty-third (ogdoei met' eikadas) of Skirophorion, the twenty-third of the prytany. (5) Council in the Council chamber (em bouleutēriōi). Of the presiding committee -nes son of Philostratos of Pelekes was putting to the vote and his fellow presiding committee members. The Council decided. Diokles son of Aristophilos of Erchia proposed: since the grain protectors (sitophulakes)[2] of the archonship of Athenodoros (239/8) performed the sacrifices pertaining to their year on behalf of the Council and People and king (10) Demetrios and queen Phila and his descendants; and they also managed everything else well and with love of honour (philotimōs) which the laws and decrees of the People prescribed for them; and they made themselves useful to the treasurer of the Panathenaia Agathaios[3] and to the competition director (agōnothetei) Homeros and to the treasurer of the (15) Council Amphichares in whatever way they asked them; in order therefore that there be incentive (ephamillon) for the officials who are allotted at the time to carry out their office well and justly, for good fortune, the Council shall decide: to praise the grain protectors (sitophulakas) of the archonship of Athenodoros (239/8) Athenodoros of ErchiaIV, Archinos of AcharnaiVIII, Euthydemos of MeliteII, Agatharchos of Lamptrai I, (20) Demokles of AnaphlystosXII, and the allotted secretary Ergokles of KropidaiVI, for their love of honour (philotimias) and justice to the Council and the Athenian People; and the prytany secretary shall inscribe the praise for these men on a stone stele and stand it before the synedrion;[4] and for the inscription of the stele the (25) administrator (ton epi tēi dioikēsei) shall allocate the expenditure accrued.
Decree 2 (Council and People) In the archonship of Lysias (238/7), in the twelfth prytany, of PandionisV, for which Epichares son of Eudemos of AphidnaXI was secretary. On the ninth of Skirophorion, the eleventh of the prytany. Assembly. Of the presiding committee Demophanes son of Epizelos of Halai was putting to the vote and (30) his fellow presiding committee members. The Council and People decided. - son of -demos of Anaphlystos proposed: since the grain protectors (sitophulakes) of the archonship of Athenodoros (239/8) both performed the sacrifices pertaining to their year on behalf of the Council and the People and king Demetrios and queen Phthia and [his] descendants, and also managed (35) the rest well and with love of honour (philotimōs) which the laws and decrees of the People prescribed for them; - sufficient grain for the festival of the Panathenaia . . . achieved; and they made themselves useful in the ways they asked them to the treasurer of the Panathenaia Agathaios of Prospalta (40) and to the competition director (agōnothetei) Homeros of E- . . . elected from the People, and to the treasurer of the Council Amphichares of Eiresidai, and for these things they were praised by the Council of six hundred; and they brought (apenēnochasi) their [records (logous)] before the auditors (logistas) and rendered their accounts (euthunas dedōkasi); in order therefore that there be [incentive (ephamillon)] for (45) the officials who are allotted at the time to carry out their office well and justly, knowing that they will be honoured by the People, the presiding committee (proedrous) allotted for the coming Assembly shall put the matter on the agenda and submit the opinion of the Council to the People, that it seems good to the Council to praise the grain protectors (sitophulakas) of the archonship of Athenodoros (239/8) Athenodoros (50) of ErchiaIV, Archinos of AcharnaiVIII, Agatharchos of LamptraiI, Demokles of AnaphlystosXII, Euthydemos of MeliteII, and the allotted secretary Ergokles of KropidaiVI and to crown them with a [gold] crown according to the law for their love of honour (philotimias) and justice to the Council and the Athenian People; and the prytany (55) secretary shall inscribe this decree on a stone stele and stand it before the synedrion;[4] and for the inscription of the stele the treasurer of the military fund (tamian tōn stratiōtikōn) shall allocate the expenditure accrued.
