. . . . . . This decree the [prytany] secretary^[4] shall inscribe on the acropolis; the treasurer shall give the money for the stele from the People's fund for expenditure on decrees; (5) [and to send ambassadors to Karystos to] receive the oaths [from the Karystians; and there shall swear] for them the generals [and the taxiarchs and the] Council. Praise the People of Karystos and the ambassadors (presbeis) of the Karystians and their representative (sunedron), and invite them to hospitality (xenia) in the city hall (prutaneion) (10) tomorrow.^[1] Praise also Menon the general and the ambassadors (presbeis) sent to Karystos, and invite them to dinner (deipnon) in the city hall (prutaneion) tomorrow; and the treasurer of the People shall pay them travel expenses of 20 drachmas from the People's fund for expenditure on decrees; and the treasurer (15) of the People shall pay also to the ambassadors (presbesi) who have served on embassies to Eretria and Chalkis and Hestiaia 20 drachmas each. And to those who were ambassadors regarding the alliance the treasurer of the People shall pay 10 drachmas each. These swore: the Council of the archonship of Agathokles (357/6); the (20) generals, [[Chabrias of Aixone]]^[2], Cha[brias of Aixone or res of Angele], Iphikrates of Rhamnous, Menon of Potamos, Philochares of Rhamnous, Exekestides of Thorikos, Alkimachos of Anagyrous, Diokles of Alopeke.^[3]

[1] The cities of Euboea had joined the Second Athenian League soon after its foundation (RO 22), but after Thebes' victory at Leuktra in 371 BC they were allied to Thebes rather than Athens (Xen. Hell. 6.5.23, Diod. 15.76.1, 85.2). In the early 350s a dispute between pro-Theban and anti-Theban factions led to an invasion by Thebes and, urged by Timotheos, a prompt response by Athens, which after a campaign of 30 days brought Euboea back into the Athenian League (Diod. 16.7.2, Dem. 21.174, 8.74, Aischin. 3.85). This decree, dated to 357/6 BC (l. 19), and worded in conventional terms, reflects the settlement of the Euboean city of Karystos following the revolt, and implies similar settlements for the three other cities of Euboea: Chalkis, Eretria and Hestiaia (l. 16). Athens was to become embroiled in Euboea again in 348 BC, cf. IG II³ 1, 398 and 399. [2] This name has been erased, but traces remain legible. [3] The precise chronology of the revolt of Euboea in relation to the other allied rebellions which comprised the "Social War" cannot be established (the key literary sources are Diod. 16.7, 21-22, who narrates the Euboean episode under 358/7 BC, and the Social War under that year and 356/5, and Dion. Hal. Lys. 12.1, who assigns the war to the two years 357/6 and 356/5). The list of generals in this inscription has been brought inconclusively into discussion of the issue. Chabrias (l. 20) may have been erased because he was killed in the battle of Chios early in the war (Diod. 16.7.3-4 etc.), but other explanations are possible; and it is unclear whether "Cha-", named after him in l. 20, should be restored as "Chares", who also served at Chios and was active in the War in other capacities, including in negotiations with the Thracian kings (Dem. 23.171-73), or "Chabrias", included here, but deleted earlier in the line because his name was mistakenly inscribed twice. For what is known of the other generals listed here see RO p. 241. They all come from different tribes, except for Iphikrates and Philochares. This is the latest evidence for the operation of the older system of (broadly) one general per tribe (cf. OR 139 with n. 4); by the time of Ath. Pol. (22.2, 61.1) ten generals were elected irrespective of tribal membership. [4] This is the earliest probable occurrence of the title "prytany secretary" (grammateus ho kata prytaneian, restored ll. 2-3). This secretary was previously referred to as "secretary of the Council". After this date the titles are used interchangeably.
