[1] This fragment contains one of the honorific citations from a post-Sullan prytany decree (see SEG 28.95 with notes). It was recut into a brick-shaped block for reuse in the Post-Herulian Wall, east of the Panathenaic Way. In addition to this generalship, Leonides was archon in 12/11 BC (IG II² 1713, l. 30), herald of the Areopagos in 8/7 BC (IG II² 1722, l. 16), and gymnasiarch twice (IG II³ 4, 396); his father is mentioned in Cicero's letters as a leading statesman, and ancestors were involved in trade on Delos (E. Rawson, Athenaeum 63, 1985, 49–50). His descendants, the Claudii of Melite, were one of the most prominent families in Athens in the first and second centuries AD, supplying several dadouchs and other Eleusinian priests (Byrne, RCA, 153–64, stemma viii).
