With good fortune, in the archonship of Philisteides (son of Philisteides) of Piraeus, the superintendent being (kosmeuontos) Abaskantos (son of Abaskantos) (5) of Kephisia, the fellow-ephebes of Telesphoros, having been team leaders (sustremmatarchēsantes), having honoured themselves, inscribed their god and themselves. [1] This is a stele erected by the thirteen ephebic team leaders (systremmatarchai) for the year of Philisteides (between 194/5 and 200/1 AD, see Byrne, Roman Citizens of Athens, 2003, 530). On ephebic teams (systremmata) and team leaders see IG II³ 2087 and AIO Papers 12 sect. 1.5. Telesphoros was a healing god, depicted as a child and identified as a son of Asklepios, who was worshipped at Athens in the Imperial period (see IG II³ 4, 938 with notes). This inscription and IG II² 2227 show that he was popular with the ephebes, who perhaps viewed him as a kind of fellow ephebe. It has been suggested that this popularity means that there was a sanctuary of Asklepios within the Diogeneion gymnasium, the headquarters of the ephebes (see IG II² 4, 871 with notes).
