[1] The dedication, which has a cutting in the top for a votive, was made by the prytany of Antigonis or Demetrias, two tribes added to the list of ten original tribes in 307/6 BC, in honour of the two Macedonian kings, Antigonos I Monophtalmos and Demetrios Poliorketes. The name of the tribe has here been erased on the inscription. Both Antigonis and Demetrias suffered damnatio memoriae in 201/0: the names of the Macedonian kings and their family members were systematically erased from epigraphical records of the previous hundred years. On or shortly after the restoration of democracy in 307/6 BC a new system for honouring Council prytanies was introduced. Instead of dedications by individual prytanies in the tribal sanctuary, commemorating victory in a competition for best prytany (on which, see IG I³ 515), the city provided for inscription of relevant decrees of the Council and Assembly honouring prytanies and their officials, together with a register of the prytany (for a new-style monument see IG II³ 1, 880, of 283/2 BC. On the new-style monuments of 229/8-198/7 BC see AIO Papers 4, pp. 20-25). The language of "victory" is no longer used after 307/6 (latest dated case, IG II³ 4, 86, of 327/6), and it was perhaps at this point that the decrees ceased to be the result of a competition between the prytanies (AIO Papers 9, sect. 3). It is unclear whether this dedication preceded the reform, or, like IG II³ 4, 73, IG II³ 4, 122 and IG II³ 4, 220, is an "old-style" prytany dedication made after the new system had been introduced.
