[1] This is another figurative Attic funerary monument of the Roman period. Cf. IG II² 9691 and SEG 20.254 for other monuments of this type in the BSA’s collection. Members of the deceased’s family are attested in connection with the ephebate (as ephebes and ephebic officers) in the mid-late 2nd and early 3rd centuries AD. The portrait of Herakles in the relief is unusual in this context, and may be an allusion to military service as an ephebe. Sean Byrne has attractively suggested that -atos had died while on ephebic service. The pediment will originally have stood atop a monument which perhaps enclosed a sculpted portrait of the deceased in an architectural frame.
