[1] This stele was copied in Valetta, Malta in 1749 by Thomas Blackburne. It is not known how it got there, but Malta was a major military and commercial hub and quarantine centre. The British Museum aquired the stone some time before 1828. The relief depicts a young female wearing a chiton and himation holding a bird and an ivy leaf fan, the former a symbol of the soul and the latter one of feminine elegance. The name Synphoron (or Symphoron) is only found in the Roman period at Athens. For more detailed discussion of the inscription see AIUK 4.6 (BM, Funerary Monuments), no. 41.
