[1] This marble lekythos (cf. no. 44) was owned by the Irish-born physician Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753). His enormous collection, bequethed to the nation on his death, formed the core of the newly established British Museum. The relief depicts two elderly men, perhaps brothers, shaking hands (dexiosis, cf. no. 26). Pytharatos stands to the left and Herophilos is seated (and so may be the deceased being commemorated).
