[1] This kioniskos in the British Museum is part of the Elgin collection (cf. AIUK 4.1, no. 2). On this style of monument see no. 57, with notes. The lettering of the monument suggests a date in the second or first centuries BC. The location of the deme Gargettos has been securely identified by the discovery of a deme decree at the site of the monastery of Ieraka on the pass between Pentele and Hymettos, near modern Gerakas (W. Peek, Ath. Mitt. 67, 1942, 7-8 no. 5, cf. J. S. Traill, Demos and Trittys, 1986, 127). For more detailed discussion of the inscription see AIUK 4.6 (BM, Funerary Monuments), no. 59.
