[1] On the choregia in Classical Athens see IG II³ 4, 460, with notes. This, the choregic monument of Thrasyllos, and IG II³ 4, 467, the choregic monument of Nikias, both date to 320/19 BC, during the oligarchy imposed on Athens by Antipater after Athens’ defeat in the Lamian War. The latest dated choregic monuments commemorating victories in the dithyramb at the City Dionysia before the choregia was abolished (cf. IG II³ 4, 518), they are among the most sumptuous and were set up in more prominent locations than their predecessors in the street of the tripods. This monument was reworked in 271/0 BC to commemorate the competition-directorship (agonothesia) of Thrasyllos’ son, Thrasykles, IG II³ 4, 531, with notes (see the 2012 drawing by K. Boletis of the reconstructed monument, IG II³ 4, p. 180). This inscription is on two adjacent blocks which, in the reconstruction, apparently ran along the monument’s base. The monument is mentioned by Paus. 1.21.3, who states that there was a depiction of Apollo and Artemis destroying the children of Niobe (perhaps on the tripod, though the precise location of the depiction is unclear). Thrasyllos was among those selected to strew a couch and adorn a table for Plouton, IG II² 1933, l. 6. Euios of Chalkis (4) was a famous pipe-player (Plut. Eum. 2.1; FGrH 124 Chares F4 ap. Athen. 12.54 p. 538; Stefanis, Dionysiakoi technitai 952).
