[1] This is a prytany decree of the post-Sullan type, in which the Council permits the prytany and the aeisitoi ("those with perpetual dining rights," various magistrates and priests entitled ex officio to dine in the tholos every night) to make a dedication honouring their treasurer for successful completion of sacrifices on behalf of the community (see SEG 28.95 with notes). [2] Although they appear within a single crown, Demetrios’ and Nikostratos’ names are in different cases, so they seem to be separate individuals, the latter of whom apparently crowns the former. Perhaps Demetrios was the prytany treasurer, but Nikostratos’ role and the reason for the reference to the tribe are unclear. Demetrios is also named in l. 14 as an agoranomos (market inspector; on this position, see IG II³ 4, 30); Nikostratos may appear again as one of the prytaneis in l. 24. [3] In the post-Sullan prytany decrees, an "eponymous" appears only in this inscription and SEG 32.137 (24/3 or 21/0 BC). In the Hellenistic period, "the priest of the eponymous" (i.e. priest of the tribe's eponymous hero, in this case, Kekrops) had been honoured regularly by prytaneis (e.g. IG II³ 1, 1177, ll. 44, 53–58). In the second century AD, "the eponymous" was a member of the tribe from outside the Council who funded the prytany sacrifices; it seems to appear first in Agora XV 333 of 138/9 AD (D. J. Geagan, Athenian Constitution after Sulla, 1967, 100). Geagan suggests that the post referred to here is an early version of the second-century AD eponymous, because it is held here by a non-citizen (not otherwise attested for either post). [4] "Kentos" (l. 27) might be a form of the Latin name Quintus, but this is highly uncertain (Threatte I p. 448). Poplios (l. 35) is the normal Greek form of the Latin Publius. Neither name necessarily indicates that the bearer was a Roman (see IG II³ 4, 275 and Agora XV 272 with notes).
