This quadrangular dedication, in the shape of an altar mounted by an Ionic column-base, and inscribed in rustic cursive lettering, is one of two (possibly connected) dedications of the imperial period presumed to derive from the sanctuary of Artemis Kolainis at Myrrhinous (on which see IG II² 1182, ll. 19-20, with note; for the likely origin of our inscription in Myrrhinous, see Bultrighini, 250). For the other see IG II³ 4, 1099. For other groups of worshippers named after the deity they worshipped in Hellenistic Attica, cf. e.g. Sarapiastai, IG II² 1292 and I Rhamnous 59; Asklepiastai, IG II³ 4, 653; R. Parker, Athenian Religion (1996), 338-42. Such groups were also commonly named for their founder, sponsor or leading member, as here Aristoboulos, the "eponym" (= founder?). Cf. IG II² 2345. On the offices of "Mother" and "Father" (perhaps senior male and female members?), cf. F. Poland, Geschichte des griech. Vereinswesens, 371-73, 439; D. M. Pippidi, Dacia 3, 1959, 408-9; Bultrighini, 249 (who rightly doubts the alternative interpretation that they are father and mother of the priestess, 7). For the office of leitor ("liturgist," l. 25) cf. the homoleitor for life at IG II² 1369, l. 38 (eranistai), with O. Masson, Rev. phil. 37, 1963, 217 [= OGS I 42]. The concept of "liturgist" (sponsor) seems to the fore here (note that there is a separate priest and priestess, ll. 6-7). Bultrighini, 249, plausibly suggests that in this case he funded the inscription. The occasional use of patronymics may be for identification of homonyms or perhaps a (non-servile?) status marker.
