[1] This marble lekythos (cf. no. 44) in the British Museum was probably excavated by Lord Elgin's agent Lusieri south of Philopappos Hill (cf. AIUK 4.1, no. 2). The relief shows a standing youth, Polystratos, taking the hand (dexiosis, cf. no. 26) of a seated woman, Archagora, while a mourning woman, Pithyllis, stands behind them, their names inscribed over their heads. The name Archagora appears only three times at Athens, once on another funerary monument in the British Museum (see AIUK 4.6, no. 30). This is the only attestation anywhere of the name Pithyllis.
