[1] This marble lekythos (cf. no. 44) was acquired by the British Museum in 1842 from Somerset Lowry-Corry, 2nd Earl of Belmore (1774-1841). He was Dublin born, and one-time governor of Jamaica, and his collecting was undertaken during extensive travels in 1816-1818 in the Eastern Mediterranean. The relief scene presents Hedyle seated on a stool (diphros), taking the hand (dexiosis, cf. no. 26) of a standing bearded Alkimachos, likely husband and wife. A female figure standing to the left of Hedyle and a small girl behind Alkimachos are perhaps their daughters.
