[1] This stele was purchased by the British Museum from the collection of the 4th Earl of Aberdeen (see AIUK 4.6, no. 27). The relief depicts a seated woman pulling her himation forward over a shoulder. Her name, inscribed across the stele above, could be restored as Timo, but Demo is more common at Athens. Later, a second inscription was added below the relief, with a further name now missing or simply with a greeting or farewell from the deceased. This is the only example of the phrase "farewell, all" at Athens, where chaire ("farewell") is used almost exclusively on the gravestones of metics and non-citizens, principally after the Classical period, suggesting that the deceased commemorated in this secondary use was not Athenian.
