[1] This fragment of the mid-2nd century AD was among the inscriptions acquired in Athens by Lord Strangford, a successor of Lord Elgin as ambassador in Constantinople in the 1820s (cf. AIUK 4.2, no. 3). It belongs to a catalogue of ephebes, the young men of the city who underwent a year of official training, a genre of inscription of which there are three other examples in the British Museum dating from the Roman imperial period (see AIUK 4.3B no. 2, 3, 5). It contains to the left (col. 1) what is probably part of the list of cadet liturgists (i.e. ephebes who contributed financially to the running costs of the ephebate; "the controller" (sophronistes, l. 6) was one of the adult ephebic officers, who is probably here substituting for an ephebe. Such substitutions were not uncommon when not enough liturgists were available among the ephebes themselves). To the right (col. 2) is part of the list of Athenian citizen ephebes.
