[1] Textual note: In ll. 1-2, Schmalz restores ὁ δῆ[μος Τιβέριον Κλαύδ]|[ιον Καίσ]αρα ("the People (erected this statue of) Tiberius Claudius Caesar"). This results in a very asymmetrical first line, unless there was more text before l. 1, perhaps some variant of ἡ ἐξ Ἀρείου πάγου βουλὴ καὶ ἡ βουλὴ | τῶν Χ καὶ ("the Council of the Areopagos and the Council of the 600 and") [CdL].

Fragments of three blocks inscribed with monumental letters are preserved. These blocks have been linked to a cutting in the rock at the northeast corner of the Parthenon for a massive podium with a base measuring 4.91 x 4.44 metres. The dimensions, material, and working resemble the monument of Marcus Agrippa at the entrance to the Acropolis (IG II² 4122). Like the monument to Agrippa, it would have stood around 15 metres high and supported a bronze statue of a rider in a four-horse chariot and it would have originally been erected in the second century BC to honour a member of the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon (M. Korres in A. Jacquemin, Delphi cent ans après la Grand fouille, 2000, 320-325). There are some traces of the original dedicatory inscription, which was erased to make way for the present inscription rededicating the base to a Julio-Claudian emperor, most likely Claudius (r. 41-54 AD). If it is him, then the titulature indicates a date in 42 AD (D. Kienast and W. Eck, Römische Kaisertabelle,⁶ 2017, 83). On Claudius and Athens, see IG II² 3268 with notes.
