[1] This base for a statue of the emperor Claudius (r. 41-54 AD) was discovered by the Greek archaeologist Stephanos Koumanoudes in excavations in the area of the Athenian Agora in 1885, but now seems to be lost. On Claudius and Athens, see IG II² 3268 with notes. On Novius, who was the dominant figure in Athens under Claudius, see IG II² 1990 with notes. His fourth generalship was in 47/8 or 51/2 AD (S. G. Byrne, Roman Citizens of Athens, 2003, 171).
