(This statue of) Emperor Caesar Trajan Hadrian Augustus Olympios (was erected by) the Council and People of the Sebastopolitans in Pontos^[1] for their own benefactor in the first Olympiad (132/3 AD),^[2] (5) through the envoys Capito Scipio and Gaius -mius.

[1] This statue base is part of a group erected for Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD) in the precinct of the Temple of Olympian Zeus by delegations from cities throughout the Roman Empire to celebrate Hadrian's consecration of the temple in 132 AD (see IG II² 3290 with notes). Sebastopolis was located in central Anatolia at the nexus of important military roads. It was part of the district of Pontus Mediterraneus, located in the Roman province of Cappadocia. Hadrian visited it around 130 AD, an event commemorated in the city through the establishment of a priest of Hadrian and construction of a stoa (T. B. Mitford, ZPE 87, 1991, p. 184, no. 7 and 12, ll. 11-13). A statue at Sebastopolis seems to commemorate a son of the first envoy (Mitford no. 18). [2] The Olympiad in l. 4 refers to the festival instituted at Athens to celebrate the consecration of the temple, not the famous Olympic festival at Olympia (cf. TAM V.3 1456a).
