[1] This statue commemorates the seventh hoplite generalship of one of the leading Athenians of the Augustan period, Antipatros son of Antipatros of Phlya. He is earliest known Athenian citizen attested as active in Athenian affairs to be awarded the Roman citizenship, which he received under the patronage of Augustus’ lieutenant, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. He also appears as hoplite general in Agora XV 284, 290, SEG 29.170, Agora XV 293, SEG 17.71, and was the proposer of Agora XVI 336, a decree on cult honours for Augustus. He appears to be honoured by the Delphian Amphictyony in SEG 18.223, and three of his slaves as commemorated in IG II² 8413. Descendants are traceable down to the mid-second century AD (Byrne, RCA, pp. 423-24, 484-86, and stemma xvi, cf. AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 5).
