[1] This pillar is a milestone with three separate inscriptions (on milestones, see IG II² 5, 13294 with notes). It seems to have originally been part of a set of milestones in the shape of herms (see I Eleusis 647 with notes), although the head is lost. Texts A & C specify that it was originally located 6 Roman miles (ca. 8870 m) from the city of Athens. This suggests that it originally stood somewhere near the Monastery of Dafni where it was found, on the Sacred Way from Athens to Eleusis and onward to Patrai. Two other milestones (IG II² 5, 13298-13299) were found in the same place. [2] Face A is dedicated to Emperor Alexander Severus (r. 222-235 AD), who is also attested at Athens in Agora XV 491, l. 14, SEG 26.192 and honoured with an ephebic festival, the Alexandreia in SEG 26.184, l. 22. [3] Face B is dedicated to the brothers Valentinian and Valens, who were co-emperors from 364 to 375 AD, with Valens as ruler of the East. IG II² 5, 13294 VII is another milestone from the same set. [4] Face C is in Latin rather than Greek and is dedicated to Arcadius and Honorius, who were co-emperors from 395-402 AD (after which they were joined by Theodosius II). They are also honoured in IG II² 5, 13292. IG II² 5, 13294 VI, 13299 and 13300, as well as A. Rizakis, Achaïe II, 1998, no. 27b and 31 from Patrai are other milestones from the same programme. The restoration of the route from Athens to Patrai which these milestones attest was probably a reaction to the invasion of Greece by Alaric the Goth in 395-397 AD, which left the old route to Italy, the Via Egnatia, insecure (G. Molisani, Studi Classici e Orientali 26, 1977, 307-12). Eusebius was proconsul (governor) of Achaia. As a senator and a proconsul, he simultaneously holds the third and second highest titles of rank, vir clarissimus et spectabilis (most brilliant and prominent man).
