[1] On the basis of the restoration of the recipient of the dedication in l. 2 as Leos (“the hero” is an alternative possibility), W. E. McLeod, Hesperia 28, 1959, 126, located the tribal sanctuary of Leontis at the findspot of this inscription at the site of the Byzantine monastery in Daphni. This is doubted by U. Kron, Die zehn attischen Phylenheroen (1976), 200-1 and N. Jones, Hesperia 64, 1995, 508. The hero is also honoured in IG II³ 4, 25 (from the Acropolis). IG II³ 4, 199, 208, and 328 were also found at the Daphni monastery. The fact that these four inscriptions are apparently unrelated, and of types which can be paralleled in central Athenian contexts, suggests that they may have been moved out from Athens to Daphni for building purposes. This is unusual, but does occur; cf. IG II² 488 with M. N. Tod, ABSA 9, 1902-3, 155-56. [2] The chief officials of the Cleisthenic tribes were called managers (epimeletai). Each tribe appointed three of them, one from each trittys, see J. S. Traill, Hesperia 47, 1978, 97-100 (on trittyes cf. RO 46 n. 1).
