[1] In the Classical period the gymnasiarchy, like the choregia (on which see IG II³ 4, 460, with notes), was one of the festival liturgies whereby a wealthy individual would sponsor a tribal team competing in the torch race (lampadedromia) at the Panathenaia, Hephaistia or Promethea. The liturgy is mentioned several times by Demosthenes (e.g. 4.36, 20.21, 39.7) and Isaios (6.60, 7.36). See also Harp. s.v. lampas. The characteristic form of dedications by gymnasiarchs was a stepped base, into which was inserted a columella supporting the torch which was the prize for victory. This stone formed the upper block of such a base.
