[1] This triangular marble base is a choregic dedication commemorating a victory in dithyrambic competitions at the Thargelia (cf. IG II³ 4, 475 with notes). The verbal form ‘were victorious’ is in the plural, indicating that the two tribes were the winners of the choral competition. This is rather unusual since in the Thargelia, unlike the Dionysia, the sponsor (choregos) and not the tribes is usually presented as the victor, but there are some parallels (IG II³ 4, 477, 484, 486). On the upper side, there are traces of holes for the attachment of the tripod. [2] On sponsorship (choregia) and the sponsor (choregos) in Classical Athens, see IG II³ 4, 460 with notes. It is not fully clear when the choregia at the Thargelia was officially introduced, but it presumably took place shortly before the middle of the 450s (cf. IG I³ 963).
