[1] This fragmentary marble base is a choregic dedication commemorating a victory in dithyrambic competitions at the Thargelia (cf. IG II³ 4, 475 with notes). Even though it is very fragmentary, the identification with the Thargelia is certain due to the presence of two tribes and to the findspot near the Pythion (although in secondary use built into a wall). The stone has a slot on the top for the connection to another block. This base was found together with a small joining fragment of a sixth-century inscribed base (IG I³ 948) and a fifth-century choregic dedication (SEG 61.70). [2] Unusually for Thargelia dedications, the tribes and not the sponsor (choregos) are named as the victor. Cf. IG II³ 4, 473. Even more unusual is that the verb is in the singular form (“was victorious”) and not in the plural (“were victorious”), leading to believe that the inscription was originally dedicated for a victory at the City Dionysia. This occurrence is rare, although not unparalleled for choregic dedications at the Thargelia (cf. IG II³ 4, 484).
