[1] The inscription is on a "Corinthian" helmet, which was dedicated in the temple of Nemesis in the north-east coastal deme of Rhamnous. The "Rhamnousians on Lemnos" might be a contingent of Rhamnousians who participated in a military campaign on Lemnos, perhaps (but not necessarily) its capture by Miltiades ca. 510-490 BC. Similar helmets, with similar lettering, dedicated at Athens and Olympia, might be products of the same campaign (IG I³ 518, 1466, and 1472). Alternatively, the "Rhamnousians on Lemnos" might be a group of Athenian cleruchs resident on Lemnos between the conquest of the island by Miltiades and the presumed conquest of the island by the Persians in 493 (Herodotos 6.44 and 8.82) or after the Persian Wars, who retained links to their home deme.
