[1] This list of 11 names on a wall-block includes five Athenians identifiable as from prominent Athenian families of the period (ll. 1-4, 10) as well as two Romans (ll. 5 and 6). From the prosopography the inscription can be dated to the unsettled decade, ca. 100-90 BC, and the two Romans, an early reference to Roman citizens in Attic inscriptions, reflect the close ties that existed before Athens’ decision in 88 BC to support Mithridates’ struggle with Rome and the consequent sacking of the city by Sulla in 86 BC. Further text, on another block, will have made the context clear. Probably the men had contributed financially to some project, perhaps the structure to which the block belonged. After the Sullan sack, the number of Romans participating in Athenian civic life increases and many of them assumed Athenian citizenship (see Agora XV 272 with notes).
