[1] This marble plaque is part of a series of dedications by Athenian archons in the Cave of Apollo on the north face of the Athenian acropolis. For details, see IG II³ 4, 128. The inscription is extraordinarily and sumptuously decorated, with visual allusions to the military origins of the office of polemarch (cf. Agora XVI 341, ll. 25-27 with note). The wreath and label (tabula ansata) are depicted within an elaborate temple structure, with plants and a shield bearing a gorgon’s head in the pediment. Flanking the wreath are sketchy remains of warriors in hoplite armour. The tabula is flanked by amphorae. At right there is a large palm frond. Later, the stone was recut to be used as a well cover (it may be coincidental that this gives the whole stone, as recut, the appearance of a shield). [2] Identifiable as the Polybios son of Phaustos of Phlya who was ephebe between 84/5 and 92/3 AD (IG II² 1996, l. 55). His son was subsequently also an archon and made a dedication in the Cave of Apollo (IG II³ 4, 176). [3] Flavius Stratolaos was archon in 101/2 AD (Byrne, Roman Citizens, pp. 253 and 501-5).
