[1] This fragment contains part of a will establishing a distribution or set of distributions for the Areopagites, on new year's day (1 Boedromion in this period) or like those which they already received on that day (ll. 1-2), and further distributions on a set of birthdays (ll. 4-7), perhaps those of the Emperors (cf. Agora XVI 336 and Agora XV 460) or of the endower's own family (cf. IG II² 2773). An as was a low denomination bronze coin, worth a quarter of a sestertius and a sixteenth of a denarius. The Areopagites (l. 1) are either the only beneficiaries or receive a larger sum than other beneficiaries. Either way, this is an example of the institutionalisation of their privileged position at Athens in the High Imperial period (cf. IG II² 2773 with notes). The will is made in accordance with Roman law and uses the Latin term codicilli (an appendix to a will establishing a testamentary gift). On inscribed endowments at Athens, see Puech, Orateurs 1 with notes. The date is based on the letter forms, which resemble those of Imperial letters from the reign of Commodus (B. D. Meritt Hesp. 30, 1961, 236).
