Honours for the prytany treasurer of Oineis

[Since the prytaneis] of Oineis and those with perpetual dining rights (aeiseitoi) in the archonship of -^[1] declare to the Council that the treasurer, whom [they chose] [from among themselves, Iophon] of Phyle, has made all the sacrifices [from his own resources and] has taken care of everything else with love of goodness (philagathōs), and (5)for this they call on the Council to allow them to crown him with a foliage crown, for good fortune, the Council shall decide to praise the treasurer of the prytaneis, [Iophon] of Phyle, and to crown him with a foliage [crown, with which it is traditional] to crown good (10)men, and the secretary of the prytany shall inscribe this decree on a stone stele and dedicate it in the Council chamber.

[1] This is a prytany decree of the post-Sullan type, in which the Council permits the prytany and the aeisitoi ("those with perpetual dining rights," various magistrates and priests entitled ex officio to dine in the tholos every night) to make a dedication honouring their treasurer for successful completion of sacrifices on behalf of the community (see SEG 28.95 with notes). As restored, the treasurer, Iophon, is specifically said to have paid for the sacrifices from his own pocket, something that begins to be emphasised in the mid-first century BC (E. Muñiz Grijalvo in E. Muñiz Grijalvo, J. M. Cortés Copete, and F. Lozano, Empire and Religion, 2017, 21–44). Despite this, he receives only a foliage crown and not the painted image of himself on a gilt shield which was a normal part of the honours for a prytany treasurer in the post-Sullan period; it is unclear why. The same thing occurs in Agora XV 278 and 293. [2] The form of the names of Publius Tutorius (l. 19), Gaius Valerius (l. 26), and Lucius Manius (l. 34) indicates that they are Roman citizens. Tutorii were prominent on Delos in the late second and first centuries BC (I Délos 1751, 1753–54, 2123, 2616), so Publius is probably the descendant of Italian businessmen (negotiatores) or their freedmen. Gaius Spintharos (l. 23) and Publius Andromachos (l. 29), whose names consist of a Latin praenomen and a Greek personal name, are difficult to interpret, especially the former, who appears on his funerary monument simply as Spintharos (IG II² 10162) and has a possible Athenian ancestor in the late fourth century BC (IG II² 1631, l. 348). Byrne suggests that Spintharos was an Athenian who had received Roman citizenship from his father-in-law (S. G. Byrne in D. Jordan and J. Traill, Lettered Attica, 2003, 17).
