[1] This is the top part of a stele. A small part of the pediment above is preserved, including a round shield carved in relief. The fragmentary inscription preserves the invocation of the Emperors Severus, Caracalla, Geta, the Roman Senate and People, and the three decision-making organs of Athens: the Council of the Areopagos, the Council of 500 and the People. In the Imperial period, the normal invocation "with good fortune," which appears at the start of decrees, lists of ephebes and prytaneis, and honorific inscriptions, could be supplemented with invocations of emperors (cf. IG II² 1990 with notes). This is by far the most elaborate example. It must be connected with the elevation of Geta to the status of co-emperor, which took place in this year and is commemorated by Agora XV 460. Perhaps it is a second copy of that decree or a copy of the letter from the emperors announcing Geta's promotion. Geta's name was erased following his murder and damnatio memoriae in 211 (see IG II³ 4, 1397 with notes).
