[1] This stone was the architrave of a monument. It sat atop a small naiskos and was itself surmounted by a bronze tripod, both of which are now lost (reconstruction with images, H. R. Goette, in The Greek Theatre, 2007, 141-3). [2] On the choregic monuments of the 5th and 4th centuries BC, see IG II³ 4, 460, with notes. This monument belongs to the period following the abolition of the choregia in or before 307/6 BC, when the role of choregos was formally taken over by the People, and a “Competition-director” (agonothetes) was appointed to administer the competitive festivals (cf. IG II³ 4, 518, with notes). Here the monument was used not only to commemorate Glaukon’s competition-direction (the ivy crown for Dionysos, VI, alludes to his direction of the City Dionysia), but also various other honours. It is debated whether the archon (l. 1) is the Nikias who was in office in 282/1 or 266/5 BC (discussed recently by S. Humphreys, ZPE 160, 2007, 70-72 [SEG 57.177]; P. Paschidis, Between City and King, 2008, 510-13 [SEG 58.187]; M. J. Osborne, in Matthaiou and Papazarkadas eds., Axon. Studies ... Stroud, 2015, 65-66). From their arrangement and lettering, the crowns on the left side (I, II and III) seem to have been added later than VI, and relate to victories in the cavalry contest known as the anthippasia, which was staged at the Great Panathenaia and the Athenian Olympieia festivals (see IG II³ 4, 252). Crowns V and VII, commemorating two tenures of the hoplite generalship, were also added later, it seems. Glaukon was a prominent figure, brother of the Chremonides after whom the Chremonidean War against Antigonos II is named (cf. IG II³ 1, 949, l. 17; IG II³ 1, 912). When Athens was captured in 263/2 BC he took refuge in Alexandria and became a high official of the Ptolemies (Athenian Onomasticon s.v. Glaukon of Aithalidai). Ll. 3-4 relate to the competition in dithyramb at the City Dionysia. Hippokles is also attested as pipe-player in 257/6 or 253/2 BC (Stephanis, Dionysiakoi Technitai 1282).
