[1] This stele was part of the collection of the 4th Earl of Aberdeen (see AIUK 4.6, no. 27). The inscription names four members of an immediate family (mother, son, daughter, father) in four lines, which should represent from left to right the figures in the relief. However, the figures in fact represent three women and a man. The relief, not of very high-quality workmanship, may have been purchased without being a perfect match for the family in question. The three figures on the right look towards the first figure, and so it has been suggested that this is the principal deceased and the first Aristonike in the inscription. The fact that the two women of the text have the same name, Aristonike, might suggest they are mother and daughter. Three generations of the men of this family have names from the river god Kephisos, whose sanctuary at Echelidai is known from dedications, and which was near to or in the family deme of Xypete. The use of abbreviations is rare in Attic funerary inscriptions, and here the demotic is presented with three different abbreviations depending on the space available.
