[1] This large naiskos stele was purchased by the British Museum in 1839. It had been excavated at Athens and bought at Smyrna by Rev. Francis Vyvyan Jago Arundell (1780-1846), who had been a chaplain there from 1822. The deeply carved relief from the time of Claudius or Nero depicts a nude youth, Tryphon, with a cloak (chlamys) draped over one shoulder and holding a strigil in his right hand; if he held an object in his left hand it was perhaps an aryballos. He evidently died young and is represented as a naked athlete with his gymnasium equipment. The chlamys is a marker of citizen and military status closely associated with the ephebeia (see de Lisle, AIO Papers 12, p. 30). The inscription likely continued with a demotic or ethnic.
