[1] This monument was among the inscriptions acquired in Athens by Lord Elgin (cf. AIUK 4.1, no. 2). Datable to the early 4th century BC, it commemorates one Chabrias of Selymbria, a Megarian colony in Propontic Thrace (modern Silivri, west of Istanbul), which was an ally of Athens both in the 5th century (Delian League) and later in the 4th century in the Second Athenian League (RO 22, 125). In the later stages of the Peloponnesian War it revolted from Athens, exiling its pro-Athenian party, but was recaptured by Alcibiades in 408 BC. OR 185 is an inscribed Athenian settlement with the city, proposed by him, which includes discussion of hostages taken by the Athenians. Whether Chabrias was among these Selymbrian exiles and/or hostages, is unknown. He is one of three Selymbrians known to have been commemorated at Athens, the other two being the Athenian proxenos (i.e. Selymbrian who represented Athenian interests), Pythagoras son of Dionysios on the monument from the Kerameikos, IG I³ 1154 (earlier than the proxenoi referred to in OR 185), and a woman, Xeno, IG II² 10261.
