[1] Textual Note. All editions of this list of names have been based on a transcript made by the Abbé Michel Fourmont on his visit to Athens in 1729. Earlier editions were not, however, based on the original of Fourmont's manuscript (BnF Supplément grec MS 854), but on a faulty copy prepared by his nephew for a publication that never materialised (BnF Supplément grec MS 569). This faulty copy underlay the early-19th century edition of the inscription by A. Boeckh (CIG 94) and subsequent editions, including IG II² 2394, were based on Boeckh's version. S. D. Lambert and R. Pitt have now published a new, more accurate, text based on Fourmont's original transcript (Grammateion 13, 2024, 5-13). AIO's text and translation follow this new edition.

The inscription contains a list of deme members headed by the Athenian archon, Theophrastos (archons of that name held office in 340/39 and 313/2 BC, cf. Tracy, ADT, 73), and by the demarch Euthydomos. Since a man named Euthydemos son of Euthydomos, i.e. the same name and father's name as the man listed in l. 3 of our inscription, is attested in the city deme of Melite in IG II² 1927, l. 4, this list was for a long time assigned to that deme (thus e.g. D. Whitehead, Demes, 1986, 384 no. 78). In Rationes Centesimarum (1997), 150 (= SEG 48.182), however, Lambert pointed out that it is not uncommon for the same name-father's name pair to occur in different demes (cf. C. Habicht, Hesperia 59, 1990, 459-62, and ZPE 103, 1994, 117-27) and that, taken as a whole, the names suggested that the deme that produced this list may have been Kydantidai (a small deme, bouleutic quota 1 or 2, of uncertain location in the inland trittys of Aigeis, cf. SEG 39.148) or Oa, a small-to-medium-sized deme (bouleutic quota 4, IG II³ 4, 21, 16-20, IG II³ 4, 26, 16-20, cf. IG II³ 4, 55, 16-19, Agora XV 42, 167-71. Only 3 councillors, however, appear to have been listed at IG II³ 4, 83, 15-18, perhaps e.g. because one had died. The quota apparently remained the same after the tribal reform of 307/6 BC, Traill, Political Organization, 1975, Table III, cf. IG II³ 1, 1155, 96-100). The precise location of Oa is uncertain, but it was most likely in the area of the largest deme of its trittys, Paiania, cf. CGRN 25. Alternatively, as Matthaiou notes ap. Lambert and Pitt, the deme might be Paiania itself.

The findspot of the inscription as recorded by Fourmont, Koursala, is an old name for Koropi. This is distant from Melite, but might be consistent with Kydantidai, Oa or Paiania. The topography of this area, however, has been complicated by the discovery of a cemetery at the northern end of Koropi including funerary monuments of Oe, a deme of the coastal trittys of Oineis conventionally located north-west of Athens in the Thriasian plain (cf. Humphreys, 1029-30). A case can accordingly now be made that Oe was rather an enclave of Oineis located in the area of the cemetery (thus most recently Traill, in A. Makres and P. J. Rhodes eds. Grammata Archaia. Studies .... D. M. Lewis, 2024, 86-7, 91, marked in this location on Traill's revised map of Attica, 99). Such a location for Oe, however, would be unexpected, given that the rest of the tribe's demes are north of Athens, and another possible explanation is that a group of men from Oe had migrated south to the Mesogaia, perhaps in the late 5th century (suggested by Humphreys; motivated perhaps by a desire to avoid the depradations of north-western Attica by the annual invasions of the Spartan army in the Archidamian War?).
