[1] This is a catalogue of prytaneis from ca. 45-25 BC (the date is indicated by the presence of the herald Kallikratides). According to Agora XV, only a small section of the top is missing, which would mean that (unusually for this period) the catalogue was not accompanied by a prytany decree (on these, see SEG 28.95 with notes). S. Dow suggested that it was the base for a statue of Kallikratides (Prytaneis, 174), perhaps erected by the prytany (cf. IG II³ 4, 117).

Kallikratides was herald of the Council and People in the third quarter of the first century BC. He also served as hoplite general (I Eleusis 295) and may have been the first Athenian priest of Augustus around 27 BC (I Eleusis 297; K. Clinton in M. C. Hoff and S. I. Rotroff, Romanization of Athens, 1997, 166–167). He belongs to a prominent but complicated family that is attested from the late second century BC until the end of the first century AD (S. Aleshire, Asklepios at Athens, 1991, 135). With Kallikratides, the family somehow switches deme from Steiria (tribe of Pandionis) to Trikorynthos (tribe of Aiantis). The role of herald of the Council and People was a long-term appointment, which had been held by a single family from 305/4 to 97/6 BC (see Agora XV 43 with notes). Kallikratides is the first herald attested after the Sullan Sack (cf. Agora XV 282, 287, and SEG 28.160 of ca. 30–25 BC) and it is unclear whether he was related to the earlier heralds. The heraldship had been inherited by Kallikratides' cousin(?) Oinophilos by SEG 32.137 (24/3 or 21/0 BC) and was held by a descendant in the 70s AD (Agora XV 308, SEG 28.164), but three inscriptions suggest that it was an annual post at the end of the 1st century BC (Agora XV 293, 296, 303), as it certainly was in the second and third centuries AD. [2] The prytany treasurer paid for the sacrifices and was the honorand of the prytany decrees; as a result, he is always listed first in prytany catalogues. If there had been a decree connected with this catalogue, it would have been obvious that -omos son of -omos (l. 3) was the treasurer. The fact that it is specified thus strengthens the impression that there was no decree in this case. [3] Dionysios and Zopyros (ll. 12–13) and Apollonios and Karpodoros (ll. 17, 22) are probably brothers. Argaios and Aphrodisios (ll. 44–45) are likely father and son. On the phenomenon of family members serving on the Council together, which begins in the mid-first century BC, see Agora XV 278 with notes. The label "the middle one" next to Zopyros' name (l. 13) distinguishes him from his father and (presumably) his son of the same name. [4] The names of Titus Rufus (l. 26), Publius Clodius (l. 28), and Marcus Clodius (l. 51) indicate that they were Roman citizens.
