Since, having made an approach to the Council, the prytaneis of Oineis and those with perpetual dining rights (aeisitoi) declare to the Council that the treasurer, whom they chose from among themselves, Theages son of Apollonios of Oe,^[1] has made the sacrifices to the gods to whom it was traditional from his own resources, piously and (5)sumptuously, and treated them brilliantly and with love of goodness (philagathōs) [and . . . ], being disposed (well?) towards the man, they call on [the Council to allow them to make a dedication] of a painted image of him [on a gilt shield in the Ptole]maion gymnasion^[2] and [to inscribe it with the following: "The prytaneis and those with perpetual] dining rights in the archonship of Kotys^[3] (10)[(erect this image) of their own treasurer, Theages son of Apollonios] of Oe, on account of his excellence (aretēs) [and love of honour (philotimias) regarding them," and it is fitting] for the Council always [to honour good men], uninscribed space for good fortune, [the Council shall decide to praise the treasurer, Theages son of Apo]llonios of Oe, . . . with practices and (15)[to crown him with a foliage crown, with which it] is [traditional] to crown [good men, and also to allow] the prytaneis [and those with perpetual dining rights to make] the dedication of the image [in the] Pto[lemaion gymnasion, so that, when these things are completed], it shall be apparent that the Council [has honoured . . . ] and also . . . [1] This is a prytany decree of the post-Sullan type, in which the Council permits the prytany and the aeisitoi ("those with perpetual dining rights," various magistrates and priests entitled ex officio to dine in the tholos every night) to make a dedication honouring their treasurer for successful completion of sacrifices on behalf of the community (see SEG 28.95 with notes). Theages is not otherwise attested. [2] On the Ptolemaion gymnasium, see AIO Papers 12, p. 3. The painted shields for the prytany treasurer in Agora XV 266 and for a benefactor in IRCyr. C.1 were probably also dedicated there. [3] Kotys VIII was the Roman client king of Thrace from 12 AD until he was murdered by his uncle in 18/9 AD (Tac. Ann. 2.64–67). His archonship probably falls towards the end of his reign, although the exact date is unknown. The Athenians had regularly received benefactions from monarchs since the late fourth century BC, including two of Kotys’ predecessors in the mid-first century AD, Rheskouporis I and Kotys VII (IG II² 3442–3443), but Kotys is the first example of a new type of benefactor, whose benefaction took the form of service in a key Athenian magistracy. Subsequent examples include Julius Nikanor as hoplite general in the early first century AD (IG II² 1069), perhaps Philoxenos of Cyrene in the Augustan era (IRCyr C.1), Kotys’ son Rhoimetalkas III as archon in 36/7 AD (AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 4), Q. Trebellius Rufus of Tolosa as archon ca. 85–95 AD (IG II³ 4 130), Emperor Domitian as archon ca. 87/8 (IG II² 1996), Philopappos of Kommagene as archon and agonothetes of the Dionysia ca. 93 (IG II³ 4 559), the future emperor Hadrian as archon and agonothetes of the Dionysia in 112/3 (IG II² 3286), and – much later – Ulpius Eubiotos as archon ca. 230 AD (SEG 30.82).
