[1] This base from a dedication to the the members of the Severan royal house probably supported the prow ornament (akrostolion) from the Panathenaic ship of 207/8 AD (see IG II³ 4, 1398 with notes). For Athenian statues and dedications connected with the Severan dynasty, see SEG 34.184. [2] Emperor Severus (r. 193-210) appointed his son Antoninus "Caracalla" as co-emperor in 193 AD and his second son Geta as Caesar in 198 AD, eventually promoting the latter to co-emperor as well in 209 AD (Agora XV 460). The two brothers were bitter rivals. In 211, a few months after their father's death, Caracalla murdered Geta and ordered a very extensive damnatio memoriae, in which his name and image were removed from public documents throughout the empire, including all inscriptions and even old papyri (see F. Krüpe, Die Damnatio Memoriae, 2011, esp. 195-254). Erasures of Geta's name are visible at Athens in Agora XVI 340, l. 11; Agora XV 460, l. 6-7, 23-24; and SEG 33.166, l.2. Earlier damnationes memoriae are attested in the Athenian epigraphic record for: Caligula (Agora XVIII 256-257), Agrippina mother of Nero in 59 AD (I Eleusis 354), Nero after 69 AD (IG II² 1990, not an official damnatio), Domitian after 96 (perhaps in IG II² 3283, barely carried out), Commodus in 192, reversed in 197 (IG II² 2119, l. 20), and the praetorian prefect Plautianus in 205 AD (I Eleusis 630).
