[1] This large stele, missing only its upper section, is a catalogue of the whole Council, preserving (unusually at this period) parts of all ten tribes. It is also unusual in that, thanks to the naming of the prytany secretary in l. 227 (see below), the list can be dated firmly to 335/4 BC, and accordingly supplies an abundance of valuable data for the prosopography of Athens at this period. On this genre of inscription see AIO 2776, with notes. On the men listed see the Athenian Onomasticon. Those at 51, 54, 130, 132, lack patronymics. If this is not merely a random feature, it might be that they were the only bearers of the name in their deme at this time and so a patronymic was unnecessary for identification (all the demes are small). There follow notes on the surviving entries and on the officials listed at the foot of the inscription.

Erechtheis. 2-10. 5 demes of Erechtheis have a bouleutic quota of 5 or more: Euonymon (quota 10, includes men named Androkles, Ariston), Kephisia (quota 6, includes men named Kephisokles, Androkles, Ariston), Upper (quota 5) and Lower (quota 9) Lamptrai (includes men named Androkles, Ariston), and Anagyrous (quota 6, includes no men of these names). On this basis Kephisia is marginally the most probable deme, and that would also suit a man named Kephisokles son of Kephisodotos, but the case is not decisive. 11-20. From Agora XV 492, 9, it would seem that 11-15 belonged to Lower (hypenerthen), and 16-20 to Upper (kathyperthen) Pergase.
Aigeis. 31-32. The common name Antiphon is attested in several demes of Aigeis with bouleutic quota of at least 3. Agora XV's restoration of the son of Antiphon as [Ant]iphon (31) is far from secure. It was much more common at this period for men to share name components with their fathers than to have the same name, and there are other possible names that will fit, e.g. [Lys]iphon. With IG we therefore leave the name unrestored.
Leontis. 80-81. The father-son name pair Athenodoros-Noumenios is not otherwise attested in Attica. 84. Eds. have taken Teleon as a mistake for Teleson, a name attested in Halimous. This correction was doubted by Threatte, Grammar I, 400, correctly it seems, as the name Teleon is also found in IG II² 45, 14 (Matthaiou, forthcoming in IG II³) and in a list of names of the 5th cent. BC to be published by Robert Pitt (pers. comm.).
Akamantis. 111-117. In addition to Prospalta (118) the following demes of Akamantis have a bouleutic quota of 4 or more: Cholargos, Kerameis, Kephale, Thorikos, Hagnous, Sphettos. Theo- and Thougenes are attested in Sphettos in ii AD, Philon in Kerameis in the 2nd cent. BC and Sphettos in the 4th. cent. BC. There is accordingly insufficient basis to identify the deme.
Oineis. 138-149. There are 3 demes with a quota of 6 or more: Acharnai (quota 22, includes names Hagnon, Theogenes, Lysikrates), Thria (7, includes Theogenes, Eunomos) and Oe (6, includes Lysikrates).
Hippothontis. The deme of the first six men listed is uncertain. Dekeleia was suggested in IG, but Traill, Political Organization of Attica, 21-22, pointed out that its bouleutic quota was only 4, and proposed instead Eleusis (quota 11?). In D. Jordan and J. Traill eds., Lettered Attica, 122 n. 16 (= SEG 53.182), on the basis of new prospographical data (SEG 46.167, see below), he reverted to Dekeleia, and suggested that the number of councillors could be accounted for by assuming that men from Oion Dekeleikon (quota 3) were included in this list (combined as the divided demes are combined in some of the councillor lists). The key data are (for additional detail see Athenian Onomasticon): 179 Epikouros. Byrne tentatively identifies an [Epiko]uros in Oion Dekeleikon at SEG 51.147, 17. 180-181. Sosistratos son of Menon. Neither name is attested in Eleusis, Dekeleia or Oion Dekeleikon. 182-183. Euthystratos son of Euthydemos. This is the only example of the name Euthystratos in Attica. Euthydemos is attested in both Eleusis and Oion Dekeleikon. 184-185. A Thrasykles son of Thrasyllos of Dekeleia is at SEG 46.167, l. 27 (and elsewhere). Thrasykles is also attested in Eleusis and Oion Dekeleikon or Oion Kerameikon. Thrasyllos is also attested at Eleusis. 186-187. Phokiades son of Polynikos. A Polynikos son Phokiades is attested in Oion Dekeleikon at I Eleusis 67, l. 2. The name Phokiades is also attested in Eleusis. 188-189. Dionysodotos son of Polyaratos. Neither name is attested in Eleusis, Dekeleia or Oion Dekeleikon. The other deme of Hippothontis large enough to accommodate 6 councillors is Piraeus. Menon, however, is the only one of these names attested in that deme.
Aiantis. 198-205. 5 demes are possible, in order of size, Aphidna (includes names Xenokles and Xenokleides, Aristodemos, Aristophon), Marathon (includes Aristodemos), Phaleron (includes Aristophon), Rhamnous (includes Theangelos, Xenokles, Archeptolemos, Aristophon), and Oinoe (includes Aristodemos [if Aiantid], Aristophon). [2] List of secretaries and other Council officials (227-234). This is the longest list of secretaries and other officials preserved on any Council or prytany dedication or catalogue before 307/6 BC. 227. Prytany secretary (grammateus ho kata prytaneian). "And they allot the so-called prytany secretary (grammatea ton kata prytaneian kaloumenon), who is in charge of the documents (grammatōn) and preserves the decrees that are made (ta psephismata ta gignomena phylattei) and copies everything else (talla panta antigraphetai), and attends the Council. Previously indeed he was elected, and they elected the most distinguished (endoxotatous) and trustworthy (pistotatous); for he is written up (anagraphetai) on the stelai for (tais stelais pros) treaties and proxenies and citizenship (decrees). But now he has become allotted" (Ath. Pol. 54.3). This secretary was known until sometime between 366/5 and 363/2 BC (and still sometimes afterwards) as the Secretary of the Council (grammateus tēs boulēs); he was a Council member elected for one prytany; after the late 360s he was an allotted official, not a Council member, holding office for a year. The change is apparently referred to by Ath. Pol. 54.3, and is traceable in inscriptions. Additionally, from 356/5 BC until the early 1st cent. BC, the secretary usually rotated among the tribes in the official order, beginning with tribe VII, Kekropis. He is the secretary named at most periods in prescripts of decrees of the Council and People and charged with the inscription of both decrees and laws (for exceptions see below). Ath. Pol. 54.3 seems to imply that he also had a broader archival function. He is also charged in decrees with ad hoc tasks (e.g. IG II³ 1, 298, 61-3, and cf. Sickinger). Especially after 356/5, he is important for the reconstruction of Athenian chronology. Proxenos son of Pylagoros of Acherdous is attested as prytany secretary on decrees of 335/4 BC (see IG II³ 1, 327, decree 3, 330, 331, 332), thus enabling this inscription to be dated to that year. On the individual secretaries in the period before 321, Develin, Athenian Officials (1989) is currently the most up-to-date list; on the secretaries between 352/1 and 322/1 BC see Lambert, in A. Tamis, C. J. Mackie and S. G. Byrne eds., Philathenaios. Studies in Honour of Michael J. Osborne (2010), 91-102 = IALD, 389-400. For a decree probably honouring this secretary see IG II³ 1, 323.
228. Secretary to the People (grammateus tōi dēmōi). More commonly known by the fuller title, "Secretary of or to the Council and the People or the People and the Council", he was responsible for reading out documents to the Council and Assembly (and for nothing else, according to Ath. Pol. 54.5, who specifies that he was elected by the People; cf. Thuc. 7.10, Dem. 20.94). He is the most commonly named secretary at this period in Council and prytany catalogues and dedications (IG II³ 4, 48, 52?, 75, 81, 26, Agora XV 23?, 37, 53, IG II³ 1, 360; cf. Agora XV p. 15) and the secretary of 336/5 was honoured (apparently together with "associate" secretaries), in IG II³ 1, 327.
229. Recorder (anagrapheus). This secretary was responsible for "writing up the documents (anagraphē tōn grammatōn)", which apparently means documents on papyrus (and temporary media?), not inscriptions, for which the prytany secretary was responsible. This description of his duties derives from the decree honouring Kallikratides of Steiria for his performance of this office ca. 330 BC, in IG II³ 1, 469. During the oligarchy of 321/0-318/7 and again in 294/3-292/1 BC, an official of this description replaced the prytany secretary in the prescripts of decrees of the Council and Assembly. He may also be named in the prytany dedication, IG II³ 4, 48, and appears at IG II³ 4, 53, 13-15.
230. In charge of decrees (epi ta psephismata). The precise duties of this secretary are not known, but his title echoes that of the secretary "in charge of the laws" (epi tous nomous), for whom see Agora XV 53, 19-21 (and cf. Boffo and Faraguna, 500). On him Ath. Pol. 54.4 states "they allot to be epi tous nomous another [secretary] who attends the Council and he too is responsible for making copies of everything (kai antigraphetai kai houtos pantas)". One possibility is that he was effectively the archivist of the copies of laws held in the papyrus archive in the Metroon (overseeing the public slave, demosios, who, according to Dem. 19.129, was responsible for this archive?); but his precise duties cannot be pinned down. The epi ta psephismata presumably had parallel functions for the decrees (though the archival function in respect of decrees appears to be ascribed to the prytany secretary, see above). He is otherwise referred to before 307/6 BC only at IG II³ 1, 306, 36-37.
231. Copy secretary (antigrapheus). Aischin. 3.25 states that an elected secretary of this description used to account for the revenues to the People each prytany, but that in the time of Euboulos (i.e. 350s-340s BC) the function was taken over by the controllers of the theoric fund (cf. P. J. Rhodes, Comm. on Ath. Pol., p. 601). Harp. s.v. antigrapheus = Philochoros FGrH 328 F 198, citing Aischines and Dem. 22.38 and 70, identifies two secretaries of this description, one for the financial administration (dioikesis), citing Philochoros, and one for the Council, citing the Ath. Pol.. This is not impossible, but our text of the Ath. Pol. does not mention an antigrapheus and Rhodes is sceptical. What Ath. Pol. 54.3 does say is that the prytany secretary talla panta antigraphetai ("is responsible for copying everything") and this is perhaps suggestive as to the functions of the "post-Euboulan" or "conciliar" antigrapheus (i.e. as Sickinger suggests, "involved in the copying of several types of documents"). The official of this description is (still) implicitly financial in function at IG II³ 1, 429, 22; and clearly had financial functions in the deme Myrrhinous, IG II² 1182. He does not appear in other prytany and Council catalogues before 307/6 BC, with the uncertain exception of IG II³ 4, 48.
232. Treasurer of the Council (tamias tēi boulēi). Perhaps referred to at Ath. Pol. 49.4, two treasurers of this description appear at IG II³ 1, 306, 40-42.
233. Treasurer for the dedication (tamias tōn eis to anathēma). A treasurer appointed ad hoc to deal with the financial aspects of the present dedication. Cf. IG II³ 1, 306, 25.
234. Herald (kēryx). In inscriptions from 305/4 until the late second century BC the heraldship of the Council and People seems to have been a permanent office, held by a succession of men from the same family named Eukles and Philokles of Trinemeia, later Berenikidai (cf. Agora XV pp. 14-15) and Agora XVI 52 now shows that this succession went back to the early 4th century BC. This inscription suggests that the succession was interrupted in the mid-330s (thus Woodhead, on Agora XVI 52). Alternatively the heraldship held by Diophon of Aphidna in our inscription might have been a distinct office. For the herald in the post-Sullan period, cf. Agora XV 286.
